COLOR ME POLARIZED

For many years Gray and Brown have been the only colors available in prescription polarized lenses.  Although in many cases these colors were an adequate solution for the patient, two color choices are ultimately not sufficient to meet the needs of all patients. Someone using their sunglasses for driving will have very different needs than someone who is using their sunglasses for target shooting. Thankfully the color selection for polarized lenses has exploded in recent years. iRx Polaroid now offers 12 color choices in both 1.56 and CR-39 Polarized (a more limited selection is available for high index and polycarbonate polarized lens materials).

Despite the recent expansion of colors, two problems remain.  First, many eyecare professionals are still not aware of the color choices available to them through their wholesale laboratories.  For your convenience I have listed the twelve iRx Polaroid color choices at the end of this blog.  Secondly, even if an eyecare professional is aware of the color choices available, many are not trained on the benefits of each color, and how to match them to the patient’s activities and lifestyle. This is not an easy task.  Eyecare professionals need to take into account a number of factors when dispensing polarized colors including; the specific use or activity, light conditions, amount of glare present, and the patient’s personal preferences.   In many cases dispensers need additional information and training in order to successfully dispense premium colors.

Stay tuned for future blogs in which we will focus on several different activities and how to successfully dispense polarized colors for each.
