Liam’s hospital stay
Well, as I wrote above, Liam is indeed in the hospital right now for an extended stay. On Thursday morning, the 3rd, Liam began complaining of pain in his hip. By that evening he started running a high fever, so we called his doctor that night and they set us up with an appointment the next day. Friday, the 4th of July, Ryan took Liam to his appointment in Antioch. They ended up keeping him there to take x-rays, an ultrasound, blood work, and finally a CT scan to try to pin down a diagnosis. At that point they kept telling us it was either a hip infection or appendicitis because of his intense pain and high fever. They gave him morphine for the pain, and he told Ryan that he could see "cartoons" (but there wasn't any TV on!). They decided to transfer him to Kaiser Hospital, Walnut Creek to the pediatric wing at midnight, and by Saturday night his bloodwork was showing that he has a Staph infection in his hip bone, which they diagnosed as osteomyelitis. We don't know how he got it, but it could have been from an injury that allowed the infection to grow. So they are treating him with heavy IV antibiotics for 7 days, and then hopefully he will be able to go home and continue on oral antibiotics. So far the antibiotics seem to be doing their job, and his fever has finally gone and his pain has decreased so that he is on very small doses of pain medication. He has walked a few times, but he prefers to stay in bed or be wheeled to the play room on the pediatic wing (as in the picture). They have a Playstation that he can have wheeled into his room, which he loves. His spirits are up and he's had a lot of visitors and presents showered on him! Today they're going to do a bone scan to get a better picture of what's going on. He'll also have to have some more blood drawn (which he doesn't like) to see if the infection is responding to the antibiotics. Ryan and I are rotating nights with him and our families have been helping out with the kids. We have been blessed with a good team of doctors and nurses who have done a great job of caring for him. Thank you to all of you who have been praying for him. If you want to communicate with us, the best way is by email which we can receive in his room. I’ll make sure to post an update later this week.
