National Geographic: photographer
For 25 years National Geographic has given me the opportunity to photograph stories that matter and present them to a vast audience.

Documentary: the Great Plains
My roots in Kansas and the plains have been my abiding passion. From my early newspaper days on, I have photographed everyday life. Over 30 years covering Cuba, Kansas, three years photographing small town high school life for High School, USA, coverage of the Great Plains for National Geographic, and then the landscapes of our precious Flint Hills.

Environmental: our endangered world
Central to my work for National Geographic has been issues of endangered resources, environmental threats, and sustainable life. Water shortages, genetic engineering, food safety, our precious soil, light pollution, runaway urban growth and our threatened rivers were stories I cared about deeply. My search for the pictures was also a search for understanding.

TEACHING: workshops, seminars
I was lucky. I learned first hand from masters and worked alongside a host of talented, inspired photographers learning the craft of photojournalism and story telling. I know how much personal contact and encouragement mean when you are starting out.
