In just one century since the advent of electrical lighting, mankind has obliterated much of the night and the dark skies humans had known for eons. It is estimated that fully 80% of the people alive today will never see the Milky Way again. Light pollution not only threatens the beauty of the night sky, it has severe impacts on a wide range of plants and animals, as well as changing the human environment with great impact on health and psychology. Much of this is unnecessary. Huge amounts of energy are wasted with unnecessary lighting that is poorly directed. (See Chicago below.) Simple means of changing our night lighting can not only restore the dark skies, revealing the beauty of the heavens, it can save money, too.
