Globalization and Change

An Exploration Seminar to Thailand

August 06-27, 2008.

CHID 474 & BIS 480

In this 21-day study tour to The Kingdom of Thailand, students will have the opportunity to learn about the key issues, opportunities and challenges that globalization presents to developing countries. Business, social and political issues of a global scale such as HIV/AIDS, political refugees, rural to urban migration, the illicit drug trade and population growth will be discussed and assessed. Additionally, students will be able to assess and understand how businesses, governments, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and other organizations are responding to these challenges in order to effectively cope with this dynamic and increasingly challenging globalized environment.

This seminar takes a broad and multi-dimensional look at globalization from different socio-economic, political, cultural and business perspectives. While the seminar’s primary focus will be on the business and socio-economic aspects of globalization, students from all academic disciplines will find it both interesting and worthwhile. Students will receive five credits as CHID 474 whereas UW Bothell IAS and Business students will earn five credits as BIS 480 upon successful completion of the seminar. Approvals for academic credit from other departments and disciplines are currently under review, so please check back later for an update.
