American countertenor, José Luis Muñoz, returns to San Francisco’s Mission Cultural Center this Spring to sing selections from Juana. Following his San Francisco performance he will make his debut in Topeka Kansas with the Washburn Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Norman Gamboa.
In the Spring of 2008, José Luis Muñoz made his debut in Mexíco City in a sold-out solo recital sponsored by the Syndicated Working Musicians of Mexíco. In October 2007 he sang the role of El Alma in Carla Lucero’s world premiere of the opera Juana with Tenth Muse Productions. Known for his expressive and powerful voice, Mr. Muñoz is equally comfortable in classical operatic repertoire as well as Mexican Cancion.
Mr. Muñoz has performed extensively in recitals and oratorios. This includes performances at the Ludinghaüsen Summer Art Festival (Germany), Grace Cathedral (San Francisco), Sonora Bach Festival (California), Ensemble Vocalis (San Francisco), Stanislaus Opera (California), and others. He also won First Place Countertenor in the 2004 California Opera Association Competition.
José Luis grew up in Modesto, California. His influences came at an early age from his mother, an accomplished Mariachi soloist, she encouraged his studies in violin, piano, and viola. During his piano performance studies at California State University José Luis discovered his love for singing through the encouragement of music faculty. Initially, he was trained as a tenor and years later he found his true voice as a countertenor. Since then he has studied in Europe and the United States.
