ReState of the Union
SD Single Channel Video
runtime : Loop
2006
Edited by Jorge Oswaldo
Although no words are spoken, this video speaks volumes about our real “state” of the union in America. The video is a seemingly endless loop of the audience clapping during President Bush’s State of the Union Address in 2003. At first glance, the video appears to be the normal unedited speech, however after spending some time with it, we soon realize the clapping will see no end. This piece reveals to us how our President reacts to audiences, how audiences react to the President and how we react to an edited representation of presidential speeches. Very much like our current state of affairs, the American public is ultimately left with a sense of disillusionment and powerless to change anything.
This video piece has recently received national acclaim, winning the “Best in Show” at last years DIGit 2006 exposition in New York.
