Visiting Reykjavik without dropping by The Reykjavik Art Museum in Hafnarhús, is just plain bad. You simply have to do it. The Museum is located in the dead centre of Reykjavik, towards the harbor.
Why, so important you ask? Erró is there and he is one of Icelands most important artists. This incredible painter who has been at the forefront of the pop-art movement has a permanent exhibit in this museum and it simply has to be seen. Even if you’re not into arts you’ll find this exhibit easily accessible and most definitely exciting.
I vividly remember the first time I ever saw an Erró painting. I must have been around 7 years old and was with my mum at the bank, bored out of my wits. And then I’m drawn towards this weird looking picture hanging behind the tellers. I had no idea who Erró was at the time, but the painting depicted Buzz Aldrin, Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins and that was enough to get me hooked. They were surrounded by iconic naked women and angels greeting them as they arrived on the moon. At the time Astronauts were more exciting to me than naked women and enough to spellbind me and shut me up while my mum took care of her business. For days afterwards I couldn’t get the image out of my head. Erró’s paintings are mesmerizing and you can dive deep into them and dwell there for hours exploring deeper and deeper.
Listasafn Íslands and Kjarvalstadir are also worth a visit both will hold the works of Icelands most celebrated painter Jóhannes Kjarval, amazing dude as well.
