The Magic and Mystique of Mandalas

MANDALA: CENTER OF THE CIRCLE

JON H. DAVIS creates art through his original process of “digital alchemy,” inspired by the traditional mandalas (cosmic maps of the universe) of the Himalayas. Working with his own photographs and paintings, he transforms these images into a variety of geometric designs echoing elements of nature, seasons of change, and spirit of place. These contemporary mandalas are often infused with vibrant colors and patterns reflecting the symmetry found in the natural world, as in the petals of a lotus flower, a butterfly’s wing, or concentric ripples on the surface of a pond.

Mandalas may be decorative works, sacred art, or both. They have been used for centuries as a focal point during meditation by many ancient cultures throughout the world. Creating mandalas may also be a form of meditation. Tibetan Buddhist monks create mandalas from grains of brightly colored sand, continuing a tradition dating back to the sixth century B.C. Mandalas may facilitate healing, invoke a deep sense of calm and well-being, or inspire creative energies.
