Our blog is our attempt to keep you updated with what is going on in our lives on at least two levels. First, on the ministerial level, we want to give you glimpses of our ministry in French Canada. We share this with you because we believe that effective ministry is not possible without concerted prayer. We also encourage you to spend part of your devotional time praying for fellow Christians ministering the Gospel on a foreign field.

Secondly, we want to stay in touch with friends and family who live in different contexts than our own. Though Québec borders the United States, the feeling of isolation is inescapable. Part of being a missionary in a foreign culture is simply striving to embrace life just as fully as those around us. We shop, drive, entertain, go to weddings, visit friends in the hospital, clean house, and do laundry like most people around us. Missionaries are not superhuman and other-worldly. And though we feel the urgency of the divine call each week, we marvel at how God is also found in the small stuff of life. We meet Him in big moments and in tiny ones.

Thank you for your interest. Thank you for your friendship. And if you think of it, thank you for praying for us.

Some History...

We were married on July 2, 2005 in Houston, Texas, and afterward moved to Québec, Canada as church planters to the French. We are missionaries with Avant Ministries, an inter-denominational sending agency with a passion for planting healthy churches where few or none exist.

Jonathan grew up in France as a missionary kid before moving to Canada with his family as a teenager. His interest for a Biblical approach to medicine led him to work with the Institute in Basic Life Principles. He returned to Canada after undergraduate studies in Minnesota and Louisiana to pursue a M.Div. in Montréal, Québec. Having graduated from seminary, Jonathan is the missionary pastor of a French church plant in Chambly, Québec.

Rebekah was born in Houston, Texas, and worked with Character First! Education for ten years teaching and writing curriculum for public schools. She traveled extensively with her brother, Robert, as the international teacher trainer team. She is now studying French and is actively working in the Chambly church plant.

On May 30, 2008, Caleb Edward was born 7 weeks prematurely due to placenta complications. He weighed 3-lbs 4-oz and was able to come home from the hospital one month after his birth. Though tiny, he was in perfect health. Parenthood has been a blast! Caleb is spelled the same and pronounced similarly in both English and French, and means “whole-hearted.” His middle name is the middle name of Rebekah’s deceased father, and Caleb seems to have inherited his granddaddy’s joyful spirit and love of people.
