Yantras are ancient sacred symbols derived from Tantric Hinduism and Buddhism. The Sri Yantra, at left, is believed to be a ‘cosmic machine of enlightenment’, and ancient texts give a very specific mathematical formula for creating the design accurately, so it will work properly. This yantra, or mandala, is the visual manifestation of ‘OM’. Rich in symbolism of the masculine/feminine energy and our union with source, this yantra is a fascinating study in timeless spirituality.
After extensive research on yantra forms and their meanings, graphic designer John Marcum began creating elaborate mathematically and historically accurate digitally-created yantras, replacing old style flat colored mandalas with images and textures that gave more insight into their meaning for the casual observer. Images were used instead of flat colors, so one could immediately know more about the intended symbolism. John created an entire set of 9 planetary yantras, below, some of which Jay Marsh merged with his natural-media paintings, as seen on the artwork page.
For the ultimate in vibrational accuracy, these yantras utilize actual NASA images of the planets themselves! There are also images of Ayurvedic gemstones, metals, the elements and an intricate blend of creative elements that breathe meaningful life in to the yantras, ranging from internet code (Mercury) to scores of religious leaders and gurus (Jupiter) and even a poker chip bindu (Rahu). Layers and layers of meticulously-crafted images make these the most exotic yantras ever.
