On the Island of Rendova is a relatively large village called Baniata, with about 500 inhabitants. There are 2 beaches where Leatherbacks have nested in the past. Reports say thousands of turtles used to come here. The scientists estimated that there might currently only be 2 to 4 turtles that nest here. Years of egg harvesting has depleted the populations. The villagers are now very conservation oriented and there is a reward system in place for conserving turtle eggs and nests. By special request, the children sang for me a folk song.
