The U.S. Congress

The Wall Street Bailout has jumped from $700 Billion to $810 Billion compliments of the U.S. Congress. The Congress will now recess and head home to their districts to brag to their constituents that they have saved the world and “bye the way”, brought home some PORK for their constituents in the hope that this will help them get re-elected.

The Bailout bill that passed yesterday contains a skillfully crafted mix of tax breaks and giveaways that will allow every congressional incumbent to brag to his constituents that that he or she was successful in reducing taxes: or saving jobs; or saving the environment, etc.,etc. They can say this regardless of whether they voted up or down on the bill. During the summer congressional recess, members of Congress got an “ear full” from the voters back in their districts. This coupled with the economic meltdown has finally gotten their attention. They are worried that they will not be re-elected.

In fairness, there are a number of energy provisions in the bill that may finally help us focus on developing new energy sources. But that should not sway the voters. The Congress is largely responsible for the mess that we are in and they should be voted out of office. If they return in January, the same bunch will just continue the partisan gridlock.

It remains to be seen if the Bailout will have the desired effect. Even if it does, we will probably be in for more unemployment and the middle class and the poor will bear the brunt of the misery in the months or even years ahead. The Bush Administration and the Congress are responsible for the worldwide financial meltdown.
