John Dipper

A respected and established performer and composer, John grew up steeped in the traditions of Southern England. His unique playing style, and his compositions convey a deep understanding and passion for indigenous culture.

John’s passion for vernacular music led to his degree dissertation focussing on the interpretation of field recordings, looking at intonation, tuning and expression.  He has attended three of the Distil courses that the PRS Foundation has funded, and has developed his composing style in response to the new skills and techniques that have been modelled and explored on these courses.  This work culminated in the performance of a 15 minute composition for a medium sized ensemble at the Tolbooth in Stirling.

John’s compositions featured heavily in the national tour of the On English Ground show, exploring dance styles and music from the South of England with 14 dancers and 6 musicians.

Lately, John has focussed his skills on composing for the groundbreaking string quartet Methera, which has released two albums, containing many of John’s own compositions, as well as composing for the English Acoustic Collective.  John also works with Claudine Arcand, a leading fiddle player from Québec, creating new music that bridges the Atlantic and draws upon the rich traditions of both cultures.

John is currently touring the Sun Stations show with Luke Daniels - see the diary page for more information.
