The students of WVMS celebrated the start of the New Year & anticipation of Spring in the school Great Room on Thurs., Feb. 7th, 2008. We are the only school in Northeast Pennsylvania that offers classes in Chinese to our students from Kindergarten through eighth grade. Our Chinese teacher and Business Manager, Mrs. Spencer, works hard decorating and arranging this annual event. Students made lanterns, researched the Chinese Zodiac Signs, and the Middle Schoolers learned to calligraphy Chinese characters. The morning started with our early childhood classes making “fireworks” by popping bubble wrap, then they paraded as a dragon with their lanterns. Dressed in red for good luck, all the children enjoyed a traditional Chinese New Year feast. Some significant items included noodles for long life, fish for abundance, dumplings for wealth, oranges for good fortune, and Tian Nian Gao, “to excell”  a sweet brown rice cake to keep you sweet!
Special Thanks to Mr. Lin from No. 1 Chinese Restaurant in Edwardsville for preparing this traditional feast! To sample some Chinese food, visit them yourself in the Gateway Shopping Center (288-6602).
