The Power of Relevance - Jay Carter

The psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi author of Flow, The Psychology of Optimal Experience describes a state of being as flow, when a person is wholly engaged in an activity and a deep focus and connection with that activity is achieved. These are ultimate experiences for people and they provide the best internal motivation to learn. In this segment, we are going to hear from Jay Carter a 12th grade student at Mapleton Preparatory High School, a Big Picture school in Denver, Colorado. Botany and science are Jay’s interests and what he has pursued during his high school career.

The question remains: How has he, with the help of his advisor Amber Kim and mentor, taken this interest and turned it into learning and deep work? Here’s Jay presenting an update of his work to visiting Big Picture principals.

In the fall of 2007, Jay plans to pursue this interest in botany and science, unearthed and nurtured at Mapleton Prep, at Colorado College School where has earned a full scholarship.
