Preparing for the Sacraments

BUILDING THE FUTURE

Baptism is the first Sacrament and is therefore a very important step in faith. The Sacrament is celebrated in the parish either during Mass [on request] or normally on Sundays at 12.30.

To fulfil Church requirements, you will normally live within the parish, though permission for pastoral reasons may be obtained from your own parish priest. At least one of the parents will be a Catholic, and a minimum of two god-parents are required, one of whom will be a Catholic.

To arrange a baptism, phone the presbytery during office hours to make an appointment with Fr Jeremy.

In this parish, we have meetings every Wednesday at 20.00 in the presbytery for people who want to know more about the Catholic Faith.  You may be thinking about becoming Catholic; you may never have been baptized or you may be baptized in another Christian denomination.  You may be Catholic; but you want to know more.  You may be Catholic, but you’ve been away from the Church for a while.  One thing you have in common is that you all want to know more about the Catholic faith.

Some people who come along to these meetings have been coming to Mass for years and never felt they could ask to know more.  Others have met the parish through the baptism, communion or confirmation preparation of their children, others through sickness or death.  Some have met Catholics at work or next door.  Some are in some way dissatisfied with their lives or feel there is a gap they want to fill and they want something more.

If you are one of these people, you are warmly invited to join us.  Come and see what we are like, what we believe in.  Jesus claimed himself to be the Way, the Truth and the Life (John 14:6).  He offers us a new vision of reality; and we believe, as Christians, that this vision, his unique way of looking at reality is the truth that sets us free.

Programme for 2009 - 2010. pdf

This programme is open to Catholic children in school years 3 - 8, nearly all in Year 3. (For children in years 9 - 10 we offer the ‘Plugged In’ programme followed by Confirmation.)

The 1st Holy Communion  programme is in two main parts - 1st Reconciliation (which takes place before Christmas) and 1st Holy Communion (which takes place on the Sundays during Eastertide.)

There are sessions for both parents (monthly from September) and children (in two blocks of 7 and 9 week sessions.) Click on the programme link opposite for details of the current programme.

Confirmation Dates 2009-10.pdf (updated to include Tuesday sessions)

Confirmation is open to students in Year 10 at secondary school. The programme runs from October to June. The Confirmation Services will take place on two Thursday evenings after Easter. The dates of these will be announced later.

The registration date for candidates and their parents is on Monday 5 October at 19.30 in the parish hall. Please print and complete the FORM and bring it to that meeting.

The Church normally requires that every marriage between Catholics, or between a Catholic and a non-Catholic, be celebrated, before a bishop, priest or deacon duly authorized, and two witnesses, otherwise the parties will not, in the sight of God, be really husband and wife, even though there may be a binding legal contract under civil law.  (A marriage between two non-Catholics is not subject to this rule).

A Catholic should choose a partner who is free to marry and not bound by a previous marriage.

A “Catholic” means anyone baptized in the Catholic Church; and it also means a baptized person who has become a Catholic.

The parties should give six months notice to their parish priest before the date proposed for the marriage not only so that the necessary documents, dispensation and other formalities can be dealt with, but also to ensure attendance at an engaged couples course.

The Church permits mixed marriages (i.e. between a Catholic and another Christian) to take place, but only within certain safeguards:

The Catholic party is asked to give this undertaking:

“I declare that I am ready to uphold my Catholic Faith and to avoid all dangers of falling away from it.  Moreover, I sincerely undertake that I will do all that I can within the unity of our partnership to have all the children of our marriage baptized and brought up in the Catholic Church”.

The wedding normally takes place in a Catholic Church.  For serious reasons, however, the Church is willing to grant a dispensation enabling the parties of a mixed marriage to have the ceremony in a non-Catholic church.

A dispensation is needed for a Catholic validly to marry a non-baptized person.
