I was inspired by this article about minimalist wallet to carry around, and especially the discussion following the article in the 43Folders. I’ve been using a Hipster PDA for ages, and realised that I always carried both it and the wallet with me. After reading the ingenious ways people were minimising their wallets – many of the suggestions including the use of a binder clip as in my version of the Hipster – I realised that I had to combine the two.
The problem I was facing, were the banknotes and receipts that I had to store somewhere: There were no compartments for them in the Hipster. Also, I have to carry no less than eight(!) cards, with me – I have various cards for both business and private use. Coins I’ve always carried in the pocket; most of my trousers have a small extra pocket for them.
As a solution to all this, I first decided to reinstate the use of rubber band to hold my credit cards. Now the credit cards are carried in the trouser or jacket pocket. The ‘wallet’ part for the Hipster was made of ordinary transparent plastic document pocket (I’m not sure of the correct terminology here) simply cut into A7 size so that two of the edges are open and two closed. One of the open edges is secured by Hipser’s binder clip. See the pictures below; they should be quite self explanatory.
UPDATE: I’m now using two of these self-made plastic compartments in my Hipster: one for the notes and one for receipts and other similar stuff.
