A Paragon of Paradise

We left the snow and cold of northern Michigan and headed for the Corn Islands at the end of March, 2008.

It was pretty much the ultimate vacation with beaches, snorkeling and walks through the jungle.

Big Corn Island has a population of about 8,000 and Little Corn has a population of 500. The islands are not trendy or touristy. If you’re looking for big resorts or organized tours you’ll want to go someplace else.

Getting There

First, you need to get to Managua. We drove to Detroit and then flew Continental to Houston and then on to Managua.

You don’t need a visa or vaccinations. A passport and a tolerance for long plane rides are required.

Second, you fly from Managua to Big Corn Island. We flew on La Costeña, which stops in Bluefields.

Third, you take the panga, an open high-speed boat, from Big to Little Corn. The ride is bumpy and wet and takes about 20 minutes.

You arrive at the village and can easily reach where you are staying from there.

The two islands are about 70 kilometers off the Nicaraguan coast
