Summer Math
Each student will be assigned summer math work for the purpose of review and skill strengthening. The summer math assignment is determined by the course the student will take when she begins school in the fall. At the beginning of the school year, summer math work will be collected, checked, and tested. The work and test together constitute 5% of the first quarter grade.

Click on the name of the course you WILL take in 2008/09 to download the summer math assignment.

Summer Math Lab  will take place in Buckman 103 on the following dates:

July 9 from  1-3
July 16  from 10 -12
July 23 from 1-3
July 30  from 10-12

These are informal,  open sessions for students to come ask questions specific to problems they are struggling with. This is not a "teaching" time in the sense that a lesson will not be prepared or taught. Students may arrive and leave any time between the designated "Lab" hours.

Saint Agnes Academy Math Page
The Saint Agnes Upper School Math Department is located in the Buckman Math and Science Building. The teacher web sites indicated on the left contain course assignment calendars, course information and notes.

Teachers are available either before or after school to help individual students. The student desiring extra help should set up an appointment with her teacher.

Below are a few policies which may be helpful.

Department Homework Policy:
•    Homework will be relevant to the subject matter.
•    Homework will not be used for punishment.
•    Homework is the student’s opportunity to practice the math skills discussed in class and should be viewed as such by teacher and student.
While homework might be assigned over short holidays, it will not be given at the end of a semester or over a long holiday

Math Proficiency Test:
Each student must pass the Math Proficiency Test in order to graduate from SAA. The test is a non-calculator test that covers basic mathematical operations using whole numbers, decimals, and fractions. Each 9th grade class will take this test once during a regular class period. If a student does not pass with a score of 75% or higher, she must re-take the test until she does pass. See below for the make-up testing policy.

Math Dept. Make Up Testing Policy:
1. The SAA Math Department will conduct test and quiz make up sessions on Tuesday mornings from 7 am to 7:50 am and Tuesday afternoons from 3:25 pm to 4:15 pm. Tests and quizzes may also be made up at Saturday School from 9:00 am to 10:30 each Saturday.
Make-up tests and quizzes will not be conducted at any other time. See table below for times and locations of make up tests.

2. A student who has missed a test/quiz will have three opportunities ( Tue am - Tue pm - Saturday School) from the date of her return to school to make it up. Failure to do so will result in a zero for that test/quiz.

3. Make-up tests may be essay tests.

4.  Failure to show for a scheduled make-up will result in a grade of zero.

Honor Code:
Any instance of lying, stealing, cheating, plagiarism, or inappropriate collaboration will be reported to the Honor Council.

Inappropriate collaboration consists of copying the work or answer of another with little or no effort to understand the process.

The consequences of inappropriate classroom behavior will include a negative comment on the report card. A student with a negative comment will not earn recognition on the Dean's or Honors List.

SAA Extra Credit Policy:
The teachers at St. Agnes Academy have laid out an appropriate amount of work to illustrate the content of each course.  With this in mind, no teacher will create extra credit opportunities based on request.  However, this does not mean that the student wishing to go farther than the planned class content cannot seek satisfaction.  Such a student can inquire about any information regarding optional work through the SEEK Independent Study Program.  Many teachers add bonus questions to tests or quizzes.  When extra credit options exist, they are projects or participatory opportunities announced by the teacher either in the course description or on the teacher website.  It is never appropriate for a student having difficulty to ask a teacher “What can I do for extra credit?”  She should already be aware of such opportunities for that course.

SAA Make Up Work Policy
The responsibility for making up work missed rests solely with the student.  Short-term absences and/or missing class for any reason do not relieve the student of her responsibility for completed assignments and test preparation when she returns.  The student should check teacher websites for all details.  Upon the day of return, the student must see each teacher for work assigned when the student missed class.
