Copyright-friendly Resources

Tuesday with Dr. McH’s class, we began a discussion about copyright-friendly music resources for the classroom. Here are the resources we discussed:

1. Apple iLife Sound Effects and Garageband Loops
Apple provides over 400 sound files for use with your projects, including over 200 music tracks that can be freely used for classroom projects. Many of the music files include short, medium, and long versions of the same jingle. Many genres are represented and there are several tracks that work well together. There are five copies of the DVD containing all of these files available at the Laptop Lounge in EDU 252. Feel free to stop by and copy some or all of the files to your computer. The total file size for the iLife sound effects is 1.39 GB. The Garageband loops take an additional 1.09 GB. There are instructions on the DVD explaining where to place the files on your computer for use with your iLife applications.

2. Creating Music with GarageBand
You own the copyright to any music that you create with GarageBand. Creating a simple musical background for a movie can be very simple, even if you have no musical background. Stop by the Lounge anytime for a quick primer in GarageBand.

3. Download Copyright-friendly Music from Online Sources
Many websites offer music for download under Creative Commons licenses. Creative Commons provides a way for artists to share their work and specify how it should be used. Some artists may allow you to use their music if you give them credit, some may ask that their work not be modified, others may allow you to modify their work as long as you share the results. Go to the Creative Commons site for more information.
