one block of this america, annotated: queen lane between morris and pulaski streets, in the germantown section of philadelphia

recently i photographed this block (not far from my home in germantown), after discovering an interactive map of homicides in the city dating back twenty years, put together by the philadelphia inquirer:

http://www.philly.com/inquirer/multimedia/15818502.html

this block is only one of many such murder lanes that the inquirer webpage reveals.  looking comparatively year by year, patterns emerge of areas large and small that are hot with murder sprees for periods of time.  this particular block has gone through two waves, first in the early nineties and again in the last couple of years.

according to the inquirer webpage, in the two decades between 1988 and 2008, there were 8,062 homicides in the city of philadelphia. the overwhelming majority of the victims have been african american men, and the murders were carried out overwhelmingly using handguns.

this image is best seen by pulling it off this webpage and opening it in preview.
