Get The Earth Clock!

Created out of boredom and curiosity, the Earth Clock was made using Apple’s Quartz Composer and NASA’s Blue Marble earth texture maps.  I wanted to make a true screen saver where no pixel is static on the screen, and if you look closely, you’ll see I’ve done it.  Even the background slowly spins, making this screen saver safe for CRT and even Plasma displays.  Please feel free to download (Special thanks to Skippy for hosting the files) and enjoy (If you’d prefer a version without the clock, download this instead)!

To install, simply download and unzip the Quartz Composer file, then follow these simple illustrations:

First, open up your home folder in Finder and locate the Library folder like so:

It’s Earth Time!

Next, locate the Screen Savers folder inside there, as illustrated here:

If this folder does not exist, you should be able to create it.  Next, simply copy the unzipped file, which should have a .qtz extension (it may have a quicktime icon, but that is normal) like so:

Once your file is in place, open your System Preferences and select the Desktop & Screen Saver option like so:

Select the Screen Saver Tab at the top, and midway down the list on the left hand side you should see EarthClock listed.  Simply select it, like so, and you should be good to go.

Of course, it never hurts to give it the old College Try, so feel free to hit Test, just to make sure.  If you have any problems or questions, feel free to drop me a line!  Enjoy!
