Today was our first day of actual walking and running, and we learned a few things today about what to do and not to do. First of all, almost all of us forgot our mittens and hats. It was 19* today. Certainly warm enough to be outside exercising, but we sure could have used our outdoor clothes. After a class discussion, we decide it would be “cool” to wear additional winter gear that we normally wouldn’t bring to school. In fact, in this case everyone in the school wished they were outside walking/running with us, so we see ourselves as lucky!
Student Blog Excerpts
When my teacher told me to that we were going to walk around the school listening to music, I was shocked. It was almost like they told us we were going to get off without school work. I was okay with that. When we got out there, it was exciting. Cold, but exciting. It felt like I was actually doing something good for my health but in an interesting way. My friends and I were able to talk along the way, which made it more interesting than just walking. Mitch
I ate healthier today, and when I did I felt a lot better. It feels good to eat healthy, and it made me happy. - Emily
When Mrs. Halderson told us to get our coats on, I thought were we going on a surprise Field trip. Then when I found out that all we were doing was walking around the school, I thought why are we walking around in the freezing cold. This would be really boring. My attitude changed because it made me think twice about being healthy and the opportunity to use iPod Nanos!
At first I wasn’t very thrilled about this whole Tundra Trekkers walking thing. But at the same time I was kind of excited. I would have to say that my attitude did change throughout the walk. It was quite simple to do the walking. I should be getting out and doing some more things with my time. I actually have 2 active role models in my life. Those people would be my parents. They both have a lot of will power. They are also up for any activity or challenge that they are faced with. I think that’s awesome. - Alyson
This idea was great for some of the kids who don't fully get all of their activity in. They can get a half hour in while doing this. I didn't see one kid who looked unhappy. My feelings about this might change as the month goes on, but overall I think this whole project is going to be outrageously fun and educational. Taylor R.
I was excited because we got to listen to iPods. I was a little upset, because I somehow forgot mine at home. Another reason that made me even more upset was the fact that I really love my music. The chance to be able to listen to it during school was being brought to me, and I couldn't take advantage because I forgot my i-Pod at home. Isaiah
My dad is a great role model for me because he is always running. He goes to school extremely early every day to run or play basketball. He also tries to eat healthy all the time. Tony
My goal for this month, is to have a lot more vegetables and milk/cheese. -Kerstin
My goal for tomorrow is to get more sleep. I need to get nine hours, and I only got eight. Four to five laps is my goal for walking/running tomorrow. - Kelsey
