Israel Study Manual
Israel Study Manual
Introduction
The Bible is rooted in the geography and history of the Near East, especially in that part known as Israel. Over 90% of the biblical events took place in this tiny land. In the days of the Bible it was approximately 150 miles long and 50 miles wide! Today it is still 50 miles wide but from Mount Hermon to Eilat is closer to 300 miles. The biblical writers assume their readers are familiar with the land and its history, geography, feasts, customs, culture and language. For this reason they rarely explain these things. This often leaves readers in the 21st century without a complete understanding of the background of the text.
As we learn about the setting of the Bible, we will see that there is a hidden life in the prophets, the disciples and Jesus — a life which can only be understood when we see these writings in their proper context. As Fr. Bargil Pixner, an explorer and archeologist once said, the land itself is like a “fifth gospel.” It gives special insights to the other portions of scripture.
Western readers will find a new depth of understanding as they become familiar with the history and geography of the Bible lands. This Study Manual, along with other recommended study aids, will help students to bridge the barriers of time and to understand the context of the biblical world.
This book will help you to interact seriously with the Bible through specially prepared materials. A comprehensive list of Bible references is found in the first pages of the Reference section. A detailed description of the sites we will visit is found in the Site description section. As you study, refer to your Bible Atlas and the map section frequently.
The object of this course is to help you feel at home in the land of the Bible. Our goal is to prepare you for an intelligent experience in Israel. Far too many tourists invest their money to pay for the trip but do not invest the time to prepare for a meaningful experience. Many travelers feel lost and confused for most of their stay. This will not happen to you if you commit yourself to study this manual before you board the plane. We want you to have an adventure that is exciting, life-changing and FUN!
Some students find it helpful to highlight various points and places, especially on the maps, with colored markers. It is good to trace the route you are taking day by day so you can refer to it later. Feel free to make notes in the margins and to add blank pages for your own comments. Read for pleasure, don’t try to memorize everything. Your Study Manual will mean much more to you when you get home.
Your Study Manual is intended to deepen your walk with the Lord and introduce you to His Land and His people. You don’t have to become a biblical scholar in the few short months before the trip, but you will be a better Bible student when you return. Relax and enjoy!
