About Club Play

I am Gary Moss, former president of the Laguna Woods Village Scrabble Club and Founder and Director of Club #350 .  I have been directing scrabble clubs and tournaments for the NSA (National Scrabble Association) since 1989.  Directors, like myself, volunteer to do this job for the NASPA, and are given certain permissions from the NASPA and Hasbro to conduct business in accordance with their guidelines and rules.  Directors are versed in the rules of the game; provide local, regional, national, and even international forums providing players an arena to engage in competitions that are uniform and standard from Maine to California, from Florida to Maui, or aboard some cruise ships.

I became president of our Laguna Woods club after the passing of our founder, Geraldine Wenk, 2001.  Geraldine initiated our club in the 1970’s, when club scrabble was in its infancy.  Ours’ was one of the very first official NSA clubs in the entire country.

Due to my prior friendship and my scrabble directing prowess, Geraldine asked me to help insure the continuation of her legacy.  I was pleased, as were others, to do our part to guarantee that our scrabble club will live on in Laguna Woods Village.

The Laguna Woods Village Players charge fees to participate in their weekly event.  Fees are used for the operational costs of the event, while some portion of the fees are returned to players in the form of prizes.

There is no membership fee required to participate.

The fee to play at Club is $2 per session.  A session consists of 3 games.

Club Sessions for ‘A’ Players are conducted in accordance with the Official Rules and Word Lists of NASPA.   ‘B’ & ‘C’ players are not bound by the time restraints required in the official rules.

The equipment that we play with at clubs and tournaments must be in accordance with the standards established by the NASPA.

Equipment is provided by the club.  Players may bring their own supplies, if they comply with NASPA standards.

NEW PLAYERS SHOULD,  BUT ARE NOT REQUIRED, TO HAVE AN UNDERSTANDING OF HOW TO PLAY THE GAME.  IF YOU HAVE NEVER PLAYED SCRABBLE AT ALL, I INVITE YOU TO CALL ME FOR SOME PRIVATE COACHING.  510-1673.

When you come to your first club meeting, just bring something to write with, the club will provide the rest.

The most important factors that you will need, to get over the initial hump in fitting into the group, are Passion For The Game of Scrabble, AN ‘I CAN’ Attitude, and Perseverance.

Do Not Expect To Jump In And Win.  Even the very best ‘home’ players will go through a time when they may struggle.  SCRABBLE is much more than a game about words and vocabulary.  Your best 7 Letter Word is worthless without a place to play it.  You will find that our weakest club players stand head and shoulders above some of the best home players.  But, once you know the tricks, you’ll be competing with the best of us.  Did you know that some of the best players in the world are MATH majors?

Thanks for asking . . . . . . . .

Many players will come week after week and only learn by trial and error or  build their word knowledge when their opponent plays one of those weird scrabble words.  Maybe that’s all they want.  That’s okay.

But, as a retired educator, I have developed learning tools and lessons to help devoted players get from here to there in shorter periods of time.  If you are interested, I have created an online class.  Click Here.

I am also available for One-To-One coaching.
