Special note: As part of the Unit 6 oral test, you will memorize one of three poems printed on pp. 246-248. You may want to begin memorizing now. Here are the three recordings:

6.1: Tuesday, Feb. 3
TXBK 210-213; SAM 129-130 (all exercises from Фонетика и интонация).

-Read the section in SAM on pronouncing the soft consonants Ч and Щ. Take special note of how certain words that are spelled one way are pronounced differently (top of p. 130). Prepare the exercise at the bottom of p. 130 by reading through the list of Russian writers and making notes of pronunciation in your book. You will read them aloud in class.

-Read the short biographical sketches of the thirteen Russian writers on pp. 210-211. Look up words you don’t know. Also read about the “Детективыный роман” in the culture box on p. 211.

-Prepare ex. 6-1 through 6-3 in the TXBK.

-Finally listen to the three “Разговоры для слушания” (links below) and write your answers to the questions on p. 213 in your TXBK.

6.2: Wednesday, Feb. 4
TXBK 214-219; no SAM assignment.

-Read and understand the five dialogs, pp. 214-216. You’ll have a number of words to look up. For example, in the title of Dialog No. 1, what does the phrase “выучить наизусть” mean?

-We’ll do ex. 6-5 and 6-6 in the Давайте поговорим section, pp. 217-219.

-You will need to know the answers to the questions in ex. 6-9, p. 219, for the unit test.

6.3: Thursday, Feb. 5
TXBK 221-225 (Sections 1 and 2); Oral drills 1-3 (SAM 131-132), Written exercises 1-3 (SAM 138-139).

-Section 1. Asking about names: звать vs. называться. What’s the difference between the two “naming” verbs - звать and называться. Prepare all exercises in the TXBK.

-Section 2. How to use the short-form adjective нужен, нужна, нужно, нужны. When you need a THING or a PERSON, you use one of these forms.
Мне нужен словарь. I need a dictionary. (Словарь is masculine, so you use нужен.)
Мне нужна новая машина. I need a new car. (Машина is feminine, so you use нужна.)
Мне нужны деньги. I need money. (Деньги is plural, so you use нужны.)

6.4: Monday, Feb. 9
TXBK 225-227 (Section 3); Oral drills 4-7 (SAM 132-133), Written exercises 4-5 (SAM 139-140).
Section 3. Который constructions. Tonight you learn how to use the important word который, which links two clauses and is translated as “who” or “what/which”. Read the grammar explanation on pp. 225-226 and prepare the three exercises in your TXBK. Here are three examples showing how the relative pronoun “который” (in various forms) is used:
Это моя мама, которая живёт в Сан-Франциско.

Вот дом, в котором я живу.

Я вижу магазины и улицы, о которых вы говорили.


6.5: Tuesday, Feb. 10
TXBK 227-230 (Sections 4 and 5); Oral drills 8-16 (SAM 134-137), Written exercises 6-10 (SAM 140-144).
Section 4. Negative constructions: ни- ... не. Double negatives are required in Russian. Here’s an example:
Я ничего не знаю.
I don’t know anything.
(Literally = “I don’t know nothing.”)
Section 5. Constructions with -то and -нибудь. Кто-то (“someone”); Кто-нибудь (“anyone/someone”). Read the grammatical explanation on pp. 228-229 and especially the “guidelines” of when to choose either “-то” or “-нибудь” and the examples. You’ll need to know the forms in the chart on p. 230.
Кто-нибудь звонил? (Did ANYONE phone?)
Да, кто-то звонил, но я забыл кто. (Yes, SOMEONE phoned, but I forgot who.)
Prepare the exercises in Sections 4 and 5 in your TXBK.

6.6: Wednesday, Feb. 11
TXBK 231-233; (Section 6); Oral drills 17-18 (SAM 137) and Written exercises 11-12 (SАМ 14).

-Section 6. Declining Last Names. Some last names are adjectives (Толстой, Достоевский) and some are nouns (Чехов, Пушкин, Ахматова). Read about the case endings for these two groups of last names. (There are some surprise exceptional endings - see bold-faced examples in chart at bottom of p. 231). Prepare exercise on p. 232.

6.7: Thursday, Feb. 12
Давайте почитаем. TXBK 233-238. Review for Vocabulary test. (Recommended additional reading: TXBK 239-245, especially “Сердца трёх” by Михаил Зощенко, one of the Soviet Union’s funniest satirists.)

-In the first section, read a short biography of Наталья Владимировна Баранская. Answer the questions in ex. 6-25. In class you’ll also be asked to give your answers to ex. 11, 12, and 13.

-In the second section, “Как судили поэта” (How they put a poet on trial), you’ll read a section of the infamous trial of Joseph (Иосиф) Brodsky. For class prepare all parts of ex. 6-26, ending on p. 238.

-Prepare for the 20-word vocabulary test; see pp. 249-251 (as usual, “passive vocabulary” is not included in the test).

6.8: Monday, Feb. 16
