8.1: Wednesday, Mar. 11
TXBK 260-263; развогоры для слушания.
Тема: В магазине. Practice answering the question on p. 260 (Что продают в этом магазине?) and the question on p. 261 (Что продают в этих магазинах?) with the new words that are given as well as some that you already know. You will answer these questions in class.
Разговоры для слушания. Listen to the six recorded conversations and write down your answers to the questions in your TXBK on pp. 262-263.

8.2: Thursday, Mar. 12
TXBK 264-272 (Диалоги, Day 1).
Memorize Dialog No. 1 for performance in class. Read and translate for yourself Dialogs 2-4. Learn about the different types of stores in the culture box on p. 265. Also read about Russian clothing sizes (metric) in the box on p. 266.
Do the “Фонетика и интонация” section at the beginning of Unit 8 in your SAM, pp. 181-185. You’ll learn more about soft consonants and Intonational construction 3. Have your Student Activities Manual open to the assignment as you listen to the audio recording. Write and turn in ex. Б (182), В (183), and Д (183).
Here are tonight’s audio links:

8.3: Monday, Mar. 16
TXBK 264-272 (Диалоги, Day 2).
Memorize Dialog No. 5 for performance in class. Prepare ex. 8-2 through 8-6 in your TXBK.

8.4: Tuesday, Mar. 17
TXBK 273-276 (8.1-8.2). Oral drills 1-4 (SAM 186-187), Written exercises 1-3 (SAM 193-195).
Section 1. Past tense - Был. Read about how to say “was/were” in Russian and prepare ex. 8-11 and 8-12.
Section 2. Had and Did not have - the Past tense of есть and нет. Tonight you’ll review/learn how to say four things:
-
1. Something IS here. Здесь библиотека.
-
2. Something WAS here. Здесь была библиотека.
-
3. Something ISN’T here. Здесь нет библиотеки.
-
4. Something WASN’T here. Здесь не было библиотеки.
No. 1-2 are easy. You’ve known how to do No. 1 for a long time. The thing/person that exists or is here is in the nominative case. Last night you learned how to do No. 2. The past-tense verb must agree with the subject (был, была, было; были).
However saying that something ISN’T or WASN’T here (No. 3-4) has one more bit of complexity: the thing/person that ISN’T or WASN’T here goes into the GENITIVE CASE. Notice the examples above.
Additionally, in No. 4 the past tense of the verb will ALWAYS be “не было” (the neuter form). Examples:
Здесь не было магазина (gen. sg., masc.).
Здесь не было школы (gen. sg., fem.).
Здесь не было письма (gen. sg. neut.).
Здесь не было магазинов и библиотек (gen. pl.).
Read the grammar explanation and prepare the accompanying exercises.

8.5: Wednesday, Mar. 18
TXBK 276-278 (8.3). Oral drills 5-7 (SAM 187-188), Written exercises 4-5 (SAM 195-196).
Section 3. Went - ходил vs. пошёл, ездил vs. поехал. This short assignment is very important to understand.
The first sentence of the grammar explanation sums up what you’ll be learning and practicing: “Russian differentiates between ‘went’ in the sense of ‘set out’ and ‘went’ in the sense of ‘went and came back’ within the confines of one city.”
Read the commentary, study the chart on p. 276, and prepare the exercises in your TXBK.

8.6: Thursday, Mar. 19
TXBK 278-283 (8.4-8.5). Oral drills 8-12 (SAM 189-190), Written exercises 6-11 (SAM 197-200). Quiz on ходил vs. пошёл, ездил vs. поехал.
Section 4. The Dative case. Tonight you’ll continue learning about the Dative case. In this first section, learn the endings for nouns, adjectives, and special modifiers. Study the chart on p. 280 and make sure to read the notes at the bottom of the page. In class we’ll do ex. 8-19.
Section 5. Uses of the Dative case. Practice using the dative case in context. The four uses given are (1) age, (2) indirect object, (3) after “по”, and (4) with нужно/надо or можно. Go through ex. 8-20 through 8-25 to prepare for class.
Print out this exercise sheet and bring it to class. We’ll use it some day before the test.

8.7: Monday, Mar. 23
TXBK 284-285 (8.6-8.7). Oral drill 13-19 (SAM 190-193), Written exercises 12-17 (201-203). Quiz on the Dative case of noun and adjective forms.
Section 6. Additional Subjectless expressions: Нельзя, невозможно, трудно, легко. These words (like нужно/надо and можно) also take the dative case after them. Read p. 284 and prepare ex. 8-26.
Section 7. Likes and dislikes: нравиться/понравиться. In this section you’ll learn how to use the verb “to like” in its various forms. Notice the grammatical difference between любить and нравиться.
Я люблю пиццу.
“Пиццу” is in the accusative case, because it’s the direct object “люблю”.
Мне нравится пицца.
“Пицца” is in the nominative case! It’s as though you’re saying “Pizza is pleasing to me.”
Know how to use “to like” (нравиться/понравиться) in the present tense and the past tense.

8.8: Tuesday, Mar. 24
TXBK 286-290 (Давйте почитаем); take Unit 8 vocabulary test.
You have two things to read tonight. In ex. 8-28, answer the questions on p. 286 by referring to the information on p. 287. And in ex. 8-29 read the emails and answer the questions on p. 290.
To review for the unit vocabulary test, know words and expressions on pp. 293-296. Be able to give the Russian word for its English equivalent, and know the spelling.

8.9: Wednesday, Mar. 25
Review for Unit 8 test.
Print out this Unit 8 Review Sheet and bring it to class.

Thursday, Mar. 26
Test 8 (written and oral).
You memorized Dialogs 1 and 5. You’ll need to know them for the test. One of the dialogs will appear on the written test, and one will be on the oral test.
Oral test: In addition to performing one of the dialogs, you’ll do selected mini-situations from ex. 8-6, p. 270.
Written test: You’ll fill in blanks on one of the two dialogs. In addition the test will contain parts where you will fill in blanks with new vocabulary and grammar; answer questions in the negative; state people’s ages; and translate sentences from English to Russian.
