Wednesday, Sept. 9 – 1.1


Урок 1: Немного с себе.  TXBK 20-22 including Разговоры для слушания.


Read pp. 20-22 in TXBK.  Greetings.  On p. 20, practice saying the phrases in the two rows of pictures.  Practice until you can say them from memory.  Prepare ex. 1-1 through 1-5 on pp. 21-22.  Read the Культура и быт section about how Russians greet each other.


Go through the vocabulary “Словарь” audio recording once.  Listen and repeat the words you hear. The printed list of vocabulary is on pp. 40-41 TXBK.  Begin connecting the Russian sounds with concepts.  Here is the link:

Finally listen to "Разговоры для слушания," p. 22, and write your answers to the questions in your book.  At this point you aren’t expected to know EVERYTHING that’s said.  Pick out the information to answer the questions.

Thursday, Sept. 10 – 1.2


TXBK 22-26, SAM 1.


TXBK 22-26. Диалоги, part I.  Read over he five dialogs on pp. 23-24.  Listen to the audio recordings.  For tomorrow, memorize Dialog 2.  You'll perform it in class with a classmate – from memory.

Monday, Sept. 14 – 1.3


TXBK 22-26, SAM 15-16.


TXBK 22-26. Диалоги, part II.  Return to the five dialogs.  Read them through a second time, listening to the audio recordings.  For tomorrow, memorize Dialog 4.  You will perform it in class from memory; and I'll ask you to "personalize" it – to change a few words to make them speak about you.

Tuesday, Sept. 15 – 1.4


TXBK 27-29, SAM oral drills 1-2. 


Tonight begins the Грамматика (Grammar) section.  You'll do parts 1 and 2.


In part 1, learn the informal singular (ты) and the formal and plural (вы) forms of a few common questions and phrases.  Be able to read them smoothly by class time.  Prepare ex. 1-13 through 1-16 in TXBK. 


Also read part 2 about Russian names and prepare ex. 1-17 in TXBK.


Prepare oral drills 1 and 2 for Unit 1 in SAM pp. 19-20.

Wednesday, Sept. 16 – 1.5


TXBK 29-31, SAM oral drills 3-6 and written exercises 1-3.


Do parts 3 through 6.


In part 3, "Gender – Introduction," begin learning about how Russian names and other nouns are grouped into masculine and feminine categories.  Prepare ex. 1-18 through 1-21 in TXBK and oral drills 3-5 (p. 21) in SAM.


Next read about how to say "my" in Russian.  You'll use two different words for "my" depending on whether the thing or person you're speaking about is masculine (мой) or feminine (моя).  Be able to read the Russian sentences at the bottom of p. 30 smoothly.  Prepare ex. 1-22. 


Conclude tonight's preparation with reading about "Case" in part 5 and "the nominative case" in part 6.


In your Student Activities Manual (SAM, pp. 24-25) prepare oral drill 6 (p. 22) and write written exercises 1-3.

Thursday, Sept. 17 – 1.6


TXBK 31-34. SAM oral drills 7-10 and written exercises 4-7.


You'll do parts 7 and 8 this evening.  Leave enough time to complete this assignment, which has more oral work and writing than your previous assignments.


In part 7 you'll learn the use and endings of the prepositional case.  This is the form of the noun that you'll use when you want to say "in" or "at" some place.  Read the excellent explanation on pp. 31-32 and be sure to READ the examples OUT LOUD.  Prepare ex. 1-23 through 1-27 in TXBK. 


Read part 8 where you'll learn the answer to the question, "How do you say 'I am' or 'You are' or 'He or She is' in Russian?"


Finally prepare in SAM oral drills 7-10 and write written exercises 4-7.

Monday, Sept. 21 – 1.7


TXBK 35-37 (Давайте почитаем - Reading practice).  Write two exercises in the “Давайте почитаем” section.  Take practice vocabulary test.


This assignment is different.  In "Давайте почитаем" on pp. 35-37 you'll begin to learn how to read in Russian.  Start with the business cards on p. 35.  Do just what ex. 1-28 says to do.  Then look at the visa application on p. 36 (which you'll need to fill out if you want to visit Russian as a student or tourist).  Write ex. 1-29 on a separate piece of paper.  Finally read what a Russian student, Valya, wrote back to her teacher in Russia about her first days in America.  Prepare ex. 1-30 and write on that same piece of paper your answers to “1. Вопросы” at the bottom of p. 37.


Download the preparation sheet that describes the upcoming vocabulary tests (Monday and Tuesday) and the Unit 1 oral and written tests (Wednesday).

Tuesday, Sept. 22 – 1.8


TXBK 38-39 (Давайте послушаем - Listening practice).  Review Unit 1.  Take Unit 1 vocabulary test.  General Unit 1 review.


In tonight's TXBK assignment (Давайте послушаем) you'll listen to native speakers and answer questions in your TXBK (exercises 1-31 through 1-33). 


Here is the audio recording you need to do this assignment.


Ex. 1-31.  On a separate piece of paper, write the five subjects and the name of the teacher for each subject.


Ex. 1-32.  Write the names of the people who are part of a delegation.


Ex. 1-33.  Write the names of the people invited to the party.


Finally, review the vocabulary on pp. 40-41 of your TXBK, to prepare for tomorrow's written vocabulary test.  You'll read the English on the test and you'll write the Russian.  Spelling needs to be accurate.  1/2 off for one letter wrong; two or more letters wrong - no points for that word.  Vocabulary tests have up to 20 words and phrases for you to translate from English into Russian.




Wednesday, Sept. 23 – 1.9


Take Unit 1 written and oral tests.  Preview Unit 2.


To prepare for the Unit 1 tests, go over everything you’ve studied in Unit 1.  Consult preparation sheet that you downloaded two days ago.
