  1. 1.Course introduction.  Overview of Russian 120, requirements, GE writing component.

  2. 2.Lecture: Land and the people.  (Take notes during lectures, so that later you will be able to prepare for the exams.)


Assignment for Wednesday:

  1. 1.By the beginning of the next class send your instructor an e-mail.  Introduce yourself and tell why you are taking this course.  See syllabus for grading of this assignment.

  2. 1.Purchase Suzanne Massie’s Land of the Firebird, textbook for the course, available in the campus bookstore.  You will not be able to complete this course without this textbook.  There is one copy on reserve in the Library.

  3. 2.Read “Where is Russia?” and study map on same page.

  4. 3.Download and read “Russian  Winter” by George Feifer and prepare what you’ll say in response to the discussion question, “How does the climate affect the Russian people?”

  5. 4.Read chapters 1-3 in Land of the Firebird, then download and write answers to these questions.

  1. 1.Class discussion of Feifer’s “Russian Winter.”

  2. 2.Turn in your answers to Questions for Ch. 1-3, Land of the Firebird.

  3. 3.Class discussion of Ch. 1-3.

  4. 4.Lecture on religion in Russia.


Assignment for Friday:

  1. 1.To prepare for viewing Andrei Tarkovsky’s film “Andrei Rublev,” read this article by Anna Dzenis about the film.

  2. 2.Read this web page on Andrei Rublev’s life and view some of his icons.  (See note below on quizzes.)

  3. 3.Friday’s short multiple-choice quiz will be on information from both of these readings.

  4. 4.Response journal No. 1.  Imagine your job has sent you to Russia for a year. What will you take with you?  Minimum 100 words, by beginning of next class.

Class:

  1. 1.Turn in Response journal No. 1.

  2. 2.Take Quiz No. 1 on the two readings you did for today.

  3. 3.Begin viewing Andrei Tarkovsky’s film “Andrei Rublev.”


Assignment for Monday:

  1. 1.Read “Master of the Cinematic Image” by Stuart C. Hancock about the film maker Andrei Tarkovsky. 

  2. 2.You’ll take a quiz on the article.

You will take eight short quizzes during the course of the semester. 

Seven will count towards your grade; the quiz with the lowest score will be dropped. 

Quizzes will be given at the very beginning of class.  

Please do not arrive late.  No make-up quizzes will be given for any reason
