How To Be Human
This work seeks to explore a truer picture of the internal and external landscapes that we experience every day. Sometimes we become something different than we see ourselves to be, but only notice the shift after many seemingly invisible changes mount. For some, we grow cancers, lose jobs or spouses, become something 'other' - wondering how we've arrived there. The mining of physical and human resources alters the terrain (earth) that we share every day. Perhaps there is no greater agent that exacts direction to those forces which scour the earth for resources, commodities, and labor than the corporate engines of the world.
If you put a frog in warm water and heat it up slowly it will get cooked, but if you put it in boiling water - it will jump out. In the same way that our inner landscape can change slowly over time without our realizing it, our external landscape is being transformed. Suburban sprawl, the encroaching cloud of “economic growth” has real ramifications in terms of the physical landscape and the material and human resources that ultimately shape how we chose to live. The physical manifestations of the stock markets fluctuations and the internal charting of qualities that I use to “become more human” are landscapes to examine the "invisible" bargains we all have made that affect the paths we choose and the actual physical landscape, horizon and place we call Earth.
