Looking for blue sky

It seems like all of us are looking for that perfect place. Hot or cold, big city, small town. Sometimes we are lucky enough to live there. Or maybe we just get the chance to visit. I’ve decided what really matters to me is clean air, a little bit of nature and blue sky...

Things spun a little out of control in March when Devin received an offer to work for United Technologies in Connecticut. In many ways, the job and the location were ideal. A “no-brainer” as Devin put it. The girls and I are in Eden Prairie, finishing the school year. Devin loves his job, if not the little hotel room he is living in for the next month. We are biting our fingernails going through the contract process on a home in Burlington. Hopefully, all will go well and the house will be ready for us on June 29th.

Skiing at Hyland

Devin took the girls skiing at Hyland yesterday. My plan was to sit in the lodge, drink mochas and plan our trip to France. We woke up to very grey skies, snow and strong winds. Every inch of me wanted to go back to bed. Some of that may have to do with the gin & tonics from Saturday night but I digress. We finally jumped in the car and left the house with everyone bundled for a cold, wintry day. Hyland was a 15 minute drive at the most. The lodge was a bit cafeteria-ish. Small seats connected to tables. I don’t know why I was expecting anything like Breck or Keystone, but I was. It took about 5 minutes to bundle up the girls to prevent frostbite and they penguined out the door. Watching Sasha walk in ski boots was worth the trip alone. I was sitting below a cc tv that kept a running forecast. It was 18 degrees with windchill. Brrr! To be honest, I just kept thinking Devin might choose skiing over noses. Instead, my first sighting was Sasha standing on the moving sidewalk, happily chugging towards the “peak”. (I was reminded today that there are not mountains in Minnesota, just hills.) Devin was a step behind and then Julianna. Who fell immediately as I approached. Devin tried to moonwalk down the sidewalk. He grabs Julianna and attempts to set her upright. She topples again. And again. At this point Sasha comes pretty darn close to the top of the ramp. Devin does a mad dash (in skis) towards Sasha and reaches her just in time to help her ski off the moving sidewalk. Very 3 Stooges. Clearly, 1 adult and 2 beginners equals disaster. Devin is drenched in sweat and both girls aren’t getting it. I take Julianna back to the hut and Devin works with Sasha. 30 minutes later they switch. Everyone likes skiing now. We decided to sign Julianna up for SKIDS. She will work with 2 other kids at her skill level for 1.5 hours. Devin can focus on Sasha. No one feels like an idiot. Or so we hope. Stay tuned...

As the weather continues to keep me indoors, toasting my feet by the fire, I can’t help but think about my upcoming escapes. Sun & water. My two favorite things are up first. I managed to work my way into a trip to the Dominican Republic with my sister. The luxe resort Casa de Campo will be our home away from the kids and DH for five (yes 5!) glorious days. So what do two fun and hip girls have planned for our winter escape? Books, sun, massage, waking up to waves instead of whining. I can only imagine how my body will react when I step off the plane and my feet get a chance to warm up.

The DR is just a warm up for the big trip. FRANCE! Devin and I are spending Springtime in Paris. Or at least a few days of Spring in Paris. I just finished booking our hotels. Four days in Provence and 3 days in Paris. I have heard you can spend a lifetime in Paris and never see it all. My goals was really to escape the Minnesota weather and southern France seemed just a tad warmer than early April in Paris. We shall see!
