With its sudden and voracious fang,
Like a dog, love has bitten me.

By following the blood I have shed,
go! You will be able to follow my trail.

Take a thoroughbred horse,
set out, and follow my arduous way,
bog or hidden path,
if the ride does not exhaust you!

In passing where I have passed,
you will see that alone and wonded,
I have ranged this sad world,
and that thus I went to die
far away, far away, without discovering
the blue manor of Rosamund.

Phidyle
The grass is slumber-soft under the poplar trees
And on mossed slopes where streams, concealed,
Rise at a thousand points along the flowering field
And lose themselves in dark shrubberies.

Rest, rest, o Phidylé. Upon the foliage
A noon-day glimmers and to sleep you’re drawn.
Solely amongst the thyme and clover in hot sun
Bees buzz about their pilferage.

A warm perfume lingers throughout the glade
And the red cornflowers droop,
And birds with wings that skim the hill as they swoop
Are seeking out the wild briar’s shade.

But when the Star of stars, bent on its dazzling way,
Sees its hot passion in recess,

I have no peace, but dare not fight. I fear, I hope and burn and freeze:
I fly above the sky and collapse to the Earth; I grasp nothing while I embrace the whole world.
I’m in a prison, not open, not closed, neither a slave nor free to go.
Love kills me not, nor releases me, nor lets me live, nor lightens my load.

Without eyes I stare, without voice I cry: Wishing to die, yet seeking help, I hate myself and love others.
I fulfill myself in grief and laugh in tears; I am balanced between life and death.
Lady, what a state I’m in because of you. (Oh Laura, because of you!)

Blest be the day, the month, the year, the season, the weather, the hour, the moment.
The lovely land and place, where I first met the pair of eyes whose beauty bound me to them.

And blest be the first sweet stab of love that overcame me.
The bow and the arrows that hit me and the wounds that reached into my heart.

Blest be the countless echoes, which respond to the name of Laura.
And the sighing, the crying, and the pining.

And blest be my many folios in which her fame is published and my thoughts of her alone,
Those shared with no one.

I beheld on Earth the habits of angels and heavenly beauties in the world unequaled. This I remember with both pleasure and regret. For my vision is but dreams, shadow and smoke.

I saw tears welling in those pretty eyes, which so often have outshown the Sun. And heard words spoken with such sighs that mountains moved and streams forgot to flow.

Love, Reason, Courage, Pity and Grief rendered that cry a sweeter concord than the world is used to hearing.

This harmony so transfixed the heavens that not a leaf was noticed moving and air and wind were filled with sweetness.

This aria, Aria-L'Anima del Filosofo: "Orfeo ed Euridice" H.XXVIII:13: No 3 was recorded with the Virtuosi di Praga in 1993 under the direction of Maestro Peter Tiboris

My memory was of the beautiful flowers I received from the audience at the live performance at Dvorak Hall in Prague. I gave them to the wonderful harpist as I was traveling back to the US on a flight the next day.

This old standard resonates with me as a bridge between my Ridgeway, VA world and the aspirations of a professional singer and music minister. I have sung it in many churches in many places, but it is timeless. This recording is taken from my Juilliard recital, but is posted here as a gift to any who wish to listen. I sing praises to my God.

My mom’s favorite piece that I sing. This recording was the encore presented for my graduate recital at the Juilliard School in 1994. Over the past decade or so, this piece has become mine. This rendition is special to me because it represents a young tenor dedicating his work to his mother and to his God. I sing this very differently these days. Fuller, more breadth, more life. Not necessarily better, just different.

These wonderful gondolier songs have stuck by me since I learned them in 1992. Thanks to Dalton Baldwin for that. When I sang for Pavarotti, I forgot the last verse of the first one and had to make up most of the Italian. Wow that seems like a long time ago.

This recording is “taken from the archives” and is what a young Jeff sounded like in his senior recital at Westminster Choir College in 1992.

I love the work by Vaughan Williams and I hope to find an oboist to perform it again in the next few years.

My Pavarotti story “in memory”

I shared this story in honor of Luciano Pavarotti at our Chowan University performance on the evening of his death. Following this story, I removed a white handkerchief and held it in my right hand for the remainder of the performance in tribute to his memory.
