Madison, Wis. – Despite direct competition from the well-known Sundance Film Festival, the Beloit International Film Festival (BIFF) recently hosted a handful of notable films from around the world that were also award-worthy.  Among the winners selected, Madison , Wis. native and writer/director Kathleen Slattery-Moschkau took home ‘Best of Wisconsin,’ the acclaimed end-of-evening award, for her film Side Effects starring Katherine Heigl of Grey’s Anatomy.

Side Effects examines the pill-pushing tactics of the pharmaceutical industry’s leading companies, but has been heralded as a light and entertaining approach to a heavy issue.

In the film Heigl plays Karly Hert who has spent the last ten years selling drugs...legally, that is. Although conflicted on a daily basis by the values within the pharmaceutical industry—an industry driven by profits at the expense of patients—Karly has been seduced by the golden handcuffs of corporate America . Despite having it all, Karly examines her own morals and finds out leaving is never quite as easy as it seems.

Besides this prestigious award, Side Effects has been highly praised by critics from across the country.

Kathleen also speaks to national audiences about her inspirational journey and on various health and wellness topics.

Most recently she filmed a follow-up documentary to Side Effects called Money Talks: Profits Before Patient Safety, and launched The Kathleen Show, a nationally syndicated talk radio program. Both projects are a continuation of her efforts to provide important information in an entertaining format
