The Last Three Months

Friends, the Christmas Season in Hawaii is an awkward one! Picture Santa sweating in the 80+ degree heat, when you bring your children to take pictures with him, they put lei’s on them.  On Christmas morning, while most people were cuddled up with blankets, Jeff took our oldest son Elijah surfing.  Unlike the popular song, it was not beginning to look a lot like Christmas! However, it has been such a rich time in our spirits.  The Lord Jesus was honored and celebrated in our home as we got some much needed rest from leading our first DTS ( Discipleship Training School)!

You may realize that we have not written much the last couple of months.  This is partly because the busyness of leading a DTS is huge, but also partly because choosing what to say would be so very difficult.

We love DTS.  We love Missions.  We think our job is a dream job and we are thankful to the Lord that this is what He has called us to.  For the last three months, we have been training a group of 40 Missionaries.  Young men and women, who love the Lord, and are not willing to disengage from what the Lord wants to do in this world.  The theme of our DTS is missions in the spheres of society (business, education, government, arts and entertainment, family, etc...)!  We are training up missionaries who will know the call of God on their live’s whether they become politicians or move to the Amazon.  He’s been so faithful.  Everyday we wake up, Bethany and I have a talk with the Lord about how we can’t possibly accomplish something this big unless He does it and shows us each step to take, and friends, He has surely done it and surely guided our steps.

Every day for the last 3 months, someone has said to us, “I will never be the same after this DTS, and my life belongs to the Lord”.  One students in particular said towards the beginning of our DTS, “I came here to quit smoking and now I just want to look like Jesus.”  We have watched him look more and more like Jesus everyday, and now we have sent him out to be the Lord Jesus in New York City.  There are two teams there, in New York, and 4 in South Africa.  As you may know, these are places the Lord has had us working short term in over the last few years, and He is now bringing to fruition the dreams He gave to us there.

Allow us to  give you a small picture of what the Lord has done.  40 students  gathered together in September asking the question, “How does God want to use me?”. They are now on outreach and most know what the Lord is asking them to do next.  They are surrendered to the Lord Jesus, committed to what He asks of them, and passionate about making Him known.

At the same time, the Lord has been faithful to our family.  Our children are growing in love for the Lord and confidence in how He’s made them.  A few days ago, we asked Elijah why he sometimes stuttered.  He replied, “I don’t know, I guess I’m just like Moses.” Our heart melted to see our son so quickly recognize himself as a leader like Moses.  When we asked him if someone told him that, he said, “No, I just read it in my Bible”.  Carter is happy and friendly, and content.  Bethany has been leading women's bible studies, teaching outreach preparation in the DTS, working with the Outreach Debriefing program, homeschooling, doing one on ones with students, keeping us healthy, and looking beautiful.  Most of all, we are constantly loving each other more and loving the Lord Jesus together more.

There is one more thing!  We have an opportunity that we have been hesitant to talk about as of yet, but would like to share with you.  Months ago the Lord was giving Jeff dreams night after night that He wanted to give us a house to live in (we have been in a 300 square foot bedroom for the last few years).  He led us to call one of our supporters and friends, who said they were willing to help us buy a condo.  As of now, we are renting a brand new 3 bedroom condo in Kona! It belongs to YWAM, and is being sold to us for 25 percent less than market price.  This property has been called the promised land of YWAM Kona, intended to enable families like us to have an affordable home.  We want to make a couple of things clear.  We do not have lots of money! And if our supporter buys this house, it does not change our budget, and we will not slow down in ministry.  This has never been in our plan, the Lord simply laid it in our hands. How great is He that He wants to bless us even before we ask?

These months have seen the provision of God on many levels, but our support is still not at the level we would like it to be.  We feel like the Lord has given us the number 3000 dollars a month to live and minister on as a family, but we still are only at 2300 a month.  We pay all of our own expenses, so this is quite limited.  Soon we will be creating a new years support package, but please pray with us that this amount will be met so we can accomplish what the Lord has asked us to do.

One last thing, we are planning to work with our teams in New York City from Mid-January to Mid-March!  The Lord has provided for our flights, but we need housing while there.  If anyone knows someplace we could stay for cheap or free, then please let us know.  Bethany is leading an outreach to the international fashion shows there, and we are both a part of a leadership team for a Campaign dealing with Gender Based Injustice in March, the Hope Campaign: for Women and Girls at Risk.

God bless you friends and family, we pray the Lord would keep showing his goodness to you.  Please think about visiting us sometime.  We love you dearly, and could not do this without you.

To His glory,
Jeff, Bethany, Elijah, and Carter!
