“If I am remembered for one jacket I would pick this one. I really have to hand it to the publisher for having the balls to go with it, and thus getting screwed by the major chains who refused to carry it. I’d also like to thank the photographer for allowing me to use this image in this context.” — Chip Kidd
The photo is by Andres Serrano. This edition of the New Testament translated by Richmond Lattimore was published in 2006 by Farrar, Straus & Giroux.
The center of Christianity is the cross of Christ. Without the crucifixion, there is no Christian religion. Groups that claim to be Christian while rejecting the death, burial and resurrection of Christ are at odds with the New Testament writers.
While Christian theologians argue that much of the imagery in the Old Testament prefigures the crucifixion, there is no argument that the New Testament is all about the crucifixion. It is the climax of the story; it is the hope of the believer; and in it alone do we find the meaning of Christianity.
Chip Kidd hit the nail on the head. This cover is full of meaning. It is powerful and provocative. It is true to the subject matter with a refreshing honesty.
This is art! Thanks, Chip for a great job.
