Grillin' in Groves by Travis Lewing, A-N-T Blues Smoke BBQ
In 2004 a cook off contest was started with only 4 teams or so, I am told. This event would grow year after year and in only 4 years became a Texas state championship.
I did not do the first one. I was not even thinking about cooking at that time but, by the second year, I had purchased a pit and was looking for my first win in the cook off road. I was not as good as I had convinced myself that I was but with only 11 teams I came in 10th in chicken 5th in Brisket and 3rd in ribs an went home happy.
In year three of this event I had cooked in several other events and was ready for almost anything including the rain that fell all day long, which made the cooking somewhat different. With 19 teams the 3rd year, the results were much the same. My chicken had improved an I moved to second place with ribs and brisket in the top ten.
2007 Grillin’ in Groves was the best and largest so far with 31 teams. My brisket made final table, ribs 10th place, chicken was first place and pulled pork made a final table as well.
So this is a call to all you cooks! Mark your calendar for the weekend after labor day next year and come to Groves, Texas and enjoy the festivities with us. Our goal is to have 50 teams in the competition and I feel we will make it there.
