Pork Fiction synonymous with great fun, serious food by Kelly Brown

The Pork Fiction Championship BBQ Team is based out of Oxford with a few members scattered throughout the mid-south. The team cooks on the Memphis in May circuit and usually compete in three or four contests a year. Along with this fairly rigorous schedule they find time to cater in the Oxford area.

Pork Fiction started after head cook, John Trott, was invited to attend the 1997 Memphis in May World Championship BBQ Cooking Contest. His brother was competing with the Rebel Roaster Revue, a team of Rebel supporters from Memphis. John watched as the Rebel Roasters cooked their ‘cue and partied all weekend.  After his return to Oxford he told his friends of the experience and they all, most definitely, wanted “in”.

From those humble beginnings Pork Fiction was formed.

In 1998, the team entered the Memphis In May World Championship Contest for the first time, joining the “Patio Porker” category, which is for small teams just getting started.
This experienced sealed the concept of the team and the easy decision to continue to compete was made.

Finally, in 2001 Pork Fiction won the Patio Porker category. With that win, new doors opened, giving them the confidence to compete in the larger, more prestigious rib category at the world championships in Memphis.

From there, the awards have started piling up: sixth place in the rib division in 2005; fourth in ribs in 2006; first in ribs at the 2006 Tennessee Funfest State Championship; third in ribs at the 2007 Tennessee Funfest; first in baked beans in 2007 at Memphis in May; and fifth in shoulder at the 2007 Tennessee Funfest.

Throughout the successful, and, sometimes not so successful years, Pork Fiction has realized the importance of community. One way in which they give back is by donating their award winning food to philanthropic events such as golf tournaments and other fundraisers around the community. Pork Fiction vows to continue their effort of donating their time and talent to causes dear to their hearts.

Anyone who knows the team members of Pork Fiction, knows that they are synonymous with GREAT FUN, and of course, GREAT TASTE!

Join the team Sept. 28-29, at Oxford’s Town BBQ Throwdown. The event will take place at The Oxford Conference Center and will feature over $18,000 in cash prizes, a carnival, live music and more.
