Yo Ho Ho!

We had a really great game day today - we had eight people total!  Two new folks, Carrie Winternheimer and Bob Sweeney, joined Allen, Dave, Fred, Joey, Josh and me for a couple of great group games.

We started with a playtest of Richard Berg’s Blackbeard, a remake of the old AH game.  The game is now for one to six players instead of one to four, and is very interactive (unlike the old game, where you might go 30 minutes or longer without a turn!).  The new version allows players to do things to the active player while it’s not their turn, which helps keep everyone in the game. Also, ships now move in areas instead of hexes, and players get two major actions a turn, so things really move along.

We played for five hours, which seemed a bit long to us, but overall we had a great time.  Since there were seven of us, I acted as moderator/note taker/company clerk.  Dave came in the winner, no small part due to his very first strike, which nailed him a large haul (7500 doubloons) and gave him a big lead, although by the end of the game others were getting close, thanks to many successful port attacks.

Everybody seemed to have a good time, and I think that once a few more kinks are ironed out that this game will be a big success.

Bob came by for his first session ever as we were wrapping up the game (he had to work).  We then had a nice big game of Nuclear War (yes, the old card game!).  Joey sat out (not feeling well ) but offered some advice to Carrie, who hadn’t played before (this was Josh’s first game too).  The typical bloodbath ensued, with the last three players - Allen, Dave and I - taking each out out all together via retaliation.  We had enough nukes still in the air after that to insure even the cockroaches weren’t going to live through this one!

Check out a few pictures I took of the gang: Blackbeard and Nuclear War
