It’s all in the name
It’s all in the name
made perfect by weakness
Tuesday, March 25, 2008
In good, humble, frank, honest, earthy, Christlike fashion, this Atlanta congregation declares its identity, its purpose, and its mission in its name, and the name says it all: The Perfect Church. Look no further. Actually, look a bit further. Visit their site here. (Turn speakers on!) Consider joining them for “Elect Ladies Night, “ too, if you have it in you on Second Sundays.
“Perfect.” (adjective) meaning “having it all,” “free from flaw or defect,” “precisely accurate,” “completed.”
“It is finished,” he cried out. “It is perfected” is what he might have said had the cross been raised on McDaniel Street SW in Atlanta, Georgia. But one wonders: What was “perfected?” and “At what cost ‘perfect?’”
His life, of course. His ministry. His purpose. His death.
All of it finished. Not over. Just finished. For now. Perfect.
We would do well by him not to handle such a thing so carelessly, so loosely.
We would be wise to handle this morte Christi (death of Christ) with a touch more decorum, if not wonder.
We would be wise not to emboss our hubris in bronze. Or if we do, we should at least speak truths (see Pilate’s plaque: Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.) He spoke better than he knew. We should consider giving that a go.
An Atlanta Congregation.
If it weren’t for the obtrusive floodlight, the “dangling ‘H’” on the end of the sign, and the organ music on the website, I’d almost be sold.
