MUSIC 110 INTRO TO MUSIC

 


 

Course Description: This course presents an introduction to the art of music.  The course will focus on music of the classical Western tradition from Medieval times to the present.  Twentieth Century American jazz and popular music, and other non-Western music from around the world will be included as time permits. The course is non-technical and is geared to non-musicians.  Music terminology and concepts will be introduced as the course progresses.  The emphasis is on listening and all tests and assignments will include critical listening, aural discrimination and identification of various works and styles.  The goal of the course is to enable the student to gain proficiency in attentive and critical listening to various types and styles of music, to gain an understanding of the music through such listening, and to be able to understand and trace the historical development and evolution of the music.
