Style + Strut, Baby!
Style + Strut, Baby!
Style & Strut, baby!
Two days after the event and I think my heart rate is finally getting back to normal. Let me explain why...
Sarah and Geneve, the masterminds behind DreamGroup Productions (an amazing wedding planning company here in Vancouver), invited me out to lunch one day to discuss a “project”. They described a wedding show that would be the first of it’s kind- a bridal BEAUTY wedding show featuring all things girlie, fabulous and fashion focused. Can you believe it?! As a part of this show, they wanted to pull together some amazing and inspirational fashion shows in order to showcase some of the cities most beautiful bridal gowns. (Hold on...I had a feeling this is where I would come in) I was so pleased when they asked if I would be the sponsor for hair and makeup for the entire show- meaning I would be responsible for all the hair and makeup. WOW. Instantly, I knew it would be a lot of responsibility, but I was honoured that they would ask. Being the women that they are, they have access to pretty much any makeup artist in town but they chose ME so I couldn’t help but blush (naturally too! ha ha). I decided to take on the challenge and was excited to see how it would pan out.
Then came the news...
A couple of months after our lunch meeting, Sarah and Geneve dropped a bomb on the Vancouver wedding scene: They would be bringing in Randy Fenoli from Say Yes to the Dress to make an appearance/presentation at the show! You can imagine the news had me even more excited and feeling even more pressure but I LOVE a challenge so I couldn’t wait for Jan.22nd.
I knew that in order to pull something like this together, I would need a team of helpers. SO I rounded up the best girls I had (assistants that I hire to work with me on my weddings), we did some training and I showed them the looks that I’d designed for the models. The show involved 15 models representing 3 different wedding dress stores: Isabelles Bridal, Bisou Bridal and Pure Magnolia. My concept was that I wanted each fashion house to stand out with a look of it’s own and I believe we accomplished this nicely.

One of the things that meant the most to me in regards to the look for the show was going to be HAIR and I wanted as much of it as possible! I made a few phone calls to Abantu to see if they would be interested in sponsoring me with hair extensions, crepe hair and bangs for the models. I just knew that by having them as my secret weapon, the show would have a much more polished look. Thankfully, THEY AGREED! I was giddy when unpacking the huge box of hair they sent for us to use. You can see that by having the extensions/hair pieces, I was able to create a much more uniform look between all the models in each of their respective groups.
If you look at the above photo, the first image at the top is of the beautiful models from Isabelles Bridal. For them, we used 18 inch hair extensions from Abantu and then added a soft wave/curl to their hair. For a couple of the girls we kept their hair down but pulled to the side in a low ponytail but in general, their look was to be dramatic, brown+gold smoky eyes with long hair.
Second photo: Presenting the models from Bisou Bridal! Here, we did very feminine makeup with a focus on pinks + silver. For their hair, each girl had a messy, twisted bun and we added bangs from Abantu. Yup! You read that right...they’re all wearing hair pieces! (I have a set of bangs myself and absolutely LOVE them. No commitment! YAY!)
Third Photo: The sweet ladies of Pure Magnolia. Because Pure Magnolia focuses on organic, natural fabrics, I wanted to create a look that reflected that. I talked it over with Patty and we decided that the “maiden braid” hairstyle would be a perfect fit with a focus on fresh skin/flushed cheeks to look like the bride had just come in from outside. All of the braids were crepe hair (super inexpensive- only $6 a bag!) and we left soft, wispy pieces out for some of the girls so there would be a little movement when they walked the runway.
All in all, it was an amazing day. I felt a tremendous amount of responsibility and excitement which has left me on a high for the last 2 days. At the end of it, I got to meet and talk with Randy Fenoli who gave me a high five when I told him about the new branch of my business- Fancy Face Academy. He is all about empowering and educating women so he thought it was a wonderful idea.
Thank you so very much to my clients and friends who came to say hello and offer some support and encouragement. Especially, a HUGE thank you to the fabulous team of women I had who volunteered their time and effort to help me accomplish this once seemingly overwhelming task. Hopefully, I’ll be invited again next year and if so, I’ll be sure to call you. ;)
*big hugs and a sigh of relief*
...on to the next challenge! *wink!*
