Many folks consider jazz to be dead, yet it soldiers on with a dying club scene and less interest from a general public that isn’t educated on the style. Many musicians from a broad range of genres say that they have been influenced by jazz and site John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Miles Davis, Sun Ra, John McLaughlin and many others as influential in their music.
This show aims to explore jazz from the past and today and juxtapose it with music that flows like jazz and music that has been influenced by it. I’m not just talking about jazz samples in hip hop or smooth jazz (good god no! it doesn’t get the cool purple color), I’m referring to experimental music a la Glenn Branca et others, Minimalism, Math-Rock, Post-Rock, Ambient, Downtempo, Afrobeat, World and more. I feel many alot of music today has been touched by elements of jazz, jazz is more than just a swing beat, four on the floor and improvisation...it has taken in elements from all sorts of music as well. A full circle!
Oh, and you’ll hear some great jazz too.
