We are a family consisting of two adults, two boys and three Siberian huskies. We live in Rusko, about 15 km from the center of Turku. For the moment it is only me, Monika, who train the dogs and make all the future plans under the kennel name Snörövarens. Snörövarens is Swedish and it means something like “snow pirates”.
If you ask me, I do not even remember the time before my first dog. Bella was a cross breed small lady, that we actually originally bought as a corgi, but she turned out to be something else.
When Bella was 11 years old I started to look for a new dog. I didn’t want to be left without a dog, and as Bella had had some back problems, I was afraid that she might not be long with us anymore. So, when I saw an add in the local newspaper about huskies for sale, I had to call. And in February 1995 Willy arrived to us.
Very soon I noticed that I had been caught up in a circle of having at least two dogs at a time. Willy couldn’t be left alone, and so when we needed a new companion for him, it turned out that his sister needed a new home. Noona arrived in the summer of 1999.
During this period I also arranged several dog shows, went on courses and got my kennel name. As the dogs grew older, I felt like I would need a bit more action and so I started to look out for a new puppy. Lady Luka arrived in fall 2002, spicy and full of energy. As our first son was born one year later, we were ready to move a bit further from the city center and provide the dogs an outdoor existence.
With a big dog yard you can always fit in more dogs..! Yes, one more furry thing arrived in 2005. Keke is imported from Sweden and he is a charming personality. We have also started to train more regularly with him and Luka after I bought a paw trekker. Noona is kind of retired from these things as she will turn 14 this year.
But to race, you should have at least one more dog… For those who know the “blue book” made by our Siberian husky club in Finland, our story is a very typical one among husky people. Buying more dogs, moving to the countryside, and so on. The speed has been quite slow though compared to many others. And we do love our old and wise dogs! We take our dogs for life.
