I have been watching HDTV since 1999 and have seen some great looking HD shows on broadcast TV in that time. However, in the past year or so, I have been loving what I have been seeing and hearing on CSI-NY. I enjoy all of the CSI shows. CSI was a stunner since its debut on CBS in HD and was a great show to show off what HD is all about to non sports fans.
However, CSI and CSI Miami have very stylized looks. CSI Miami has a very unnatural looking color scheme with an overall orange look. CSI always looked a tad too green. Both are very effective in their own way however as they fit the mood of their locations. CSI has also been a little on the dark side albeit with nice shadow detail. Sometimes I wish they would either turn on the lights or open the shades when they enter a crime screen. They may be able to find more evidence that way then pointing those tiny flashlights everywhere. But I digress....
However, in the past two years, CSI-NY has dropped the cold blue color scheme that it had at its inception and now has the most natural and pleasing look of the three CSI shows. In fact, it is my opinion that CSI-NY is the best looking broadcast HD show on the airwaves, The picture is crystal clear with excellent color and detail. The colors are rendered very naturally and not overblown or over saturated. One can easily see the pores on the actors faces and all of the fine detail in their clothing. Black levels are solid rendering a nice three dimensional image.
As impressive is the audio with clear, smooth sounding dialogue and effective use of the surrounds for fine details since as the clinking of instruments and the sounds of passing footsteps in the autopsy room. Music also sounds great on this show with great bass giving my sub a real workout. The show has also been helped by some excellent writing and fine acting by the entire cast. It has become my favorite CSI show. If you haven’t seen it or didn’t like it during its first two seasons, check it out now. As always, let me know what you think.
