A Family History
The Roberts story begins in Kinver, Staffordshire – while the Sutton story begins in Crowland, Lincolnshire.  The two families were joined together in 1886 by the marriage of Florence Sutton and Gregory Roberts.

Introduction
As any family historian knows, the pleasure lies not merely in tracing your ancestors, going back as far as you can, it’s solving the mysteries.  Think back to a time when an older relative said vaguely that they had a cousin who.... or an uncle who went.... do you know who they were and where they fit into the family?  It was just such a remark that piqued my interest in researching the Roberts’ and the Suttons.

My grandma, Winnie Roberts, from time to time would tell us that her mother said that she had married ‘below her class’.  I began to ask myself why she would say that.  So I decided to investigate.

I discovered that in fact Florence did not really marry below her class, and her husband’s class was not quite what she thought it was.

Florence’s grandmother had inherited some money just before marriage.  For a few years, they lived quite comfortably and employed servants and shop assistants.   Meanwhile, Gregory’s grandfather was a Solicitor who worked in Liverpool and Brighton and other places between.  The mystery lies in what happened to these seemingly respectable businessmen.  As I have come to believe: The answers are there - you just have to know where to look.
