Illustrations used in our book, of paintings owned by museums, are not reproduced online because of difficulties in getting permission for their use. So we ask you to  imagine here a Qing Dynasty painting of a gray sky, dark at the top, fading to light below, with one white egret (crane?) soaring in from the upper right.
 
The phrase, “a white crane in the clouds” is used to describe moral integrity.
