On July 1 a 10 member New York Cares team departed for New Orleans to spend a week volunteering in neighborhoods devastated by Hurricane Katrina.
The New York Cares team joined several other groups and individuals to live and work with Hands On New Orleans. As an affiliate established post Katrina, Hands On New Orleans operates out of the First Methodist Church. It is from this location that a steady flow of volunteers from across the country come to assist in the clean up efforts.
Six days a week Hands On New Orleans sends out several teams of volunteers to gut houses, clean up debris in the streets, remove toxic mold from buildings, assist in distribution of clothes and household items at the Salvation Army and carry out various other tasks.
