Phone: Daniel’s Nokia N93 photo experience

When I started the Nokia N93/N93i User Group on the Flickr, the idea was to “show off what these amazing camera phones can really do!” One such N93 user who took me up on my challenge almost immediately is Daniel.

Even just a cursory glace to the photos on the left will surely confirm his ability with the Nokia N93.

I recently asked Daniel . . .

What's your background in photography?
I come from the blog/weblog scene and ever since my first camera phones I began to photo-blog. I work in international textile fashion marketing and there is a high demand for quick unique photos to present the products. I used the N93 for the entire promotion of my own label: www.prago-style.com

What camera phones have you previously owned?
Motorola V980, I was pretty much satisfied with it.
Although the zoom is totally useless the phone software added an awesome glow! A boring dull image could appear in surprising new bright colour effects.

Do you own any other photographic equipment?
Konika KD-220Z, Motorola V980

Why did you choose the Nokia N93 over similar camera phones, such as the K800i?
The design and the features of N93 did appear more attractive to me. The many features like TV out and the camcorder mode looked more developed than on the K800i. The exterior of N93 seems absolutely scratch proof during everyday usage, the K800i is very sensitive to scratches, in addition Wireless LAN and Bluetooth have to be improved over previous phones.

In your experience, what’s the most annoying limitation of the Nokia N93?
I am still not sure if its good enough to travel with - It depends a lot to the light conditions, the more sunny and bright it is, the better the pictures will be. I went on a day trip to Berlin lately and it was a rainy cloudy day - so most of the pictures were blurry, pale and rather unspectacular. Most of the people think its way too big but its NOT. I still have not figured out how to upload to Flickr directly from the phone, and I assume it might be too costly on the go anyway. When all is said and done it’s a great piece of kit, the best I’ve ever owned!

Do you capture video on your N93, if so, how have you found the experience?
Yes, of course - It’s awesome! Most of the people could not believe its a mobile phone - It’s like the photo mode, the more sunny, the sharper the final result - I wish I could use the Adobe software wich came along with the phone, but the software seems way to complex and complicated for semi-professionals, I have no time to learn it . . . yet!

What camera phones are you most looking forward to?
The Nokia N93i and its further levels of development , I dont have a lot of faith in Apple’s iPhone.

Crystal ball time - What do you see in the future for camera phones?
• More promotion of barcode scanning, which is an amazing feature of N93 that is not yet introduced here in Germany
• Live TV broadcasting
• More video calling features
• Hopefully better flat rates for data transfer
Many thanks to Daniel for his insightful answers, and of course for his wonderful photos, many of which can be found here.
