So I finally got around to updating my N95 to the very latest firmware. I noticed two things so far, both resolving long standing problems.

1. The Mars Effect.
You know that red tint that tainted many external N95 photos? It’s gone - in fact I’d go as far as to suggest that the N95 now produces better colour balance than many standard digital cameras. What a relief - welcome to the blue planet!

2. Shutter Lag.
Gone! Well almost, it’s now almost instantaneous, making the whole experience of taking photos with the N95 that much more pleasurable.

Things left unfixed . . .

1. Video Recording Frame Rate.
I have no idea if this will ever be fixed, but I have to say that it bugs me no end. Frame rate when recording video (in any mode) is never consistant - it makes the video look and feel quite cheap. Nokia, if you’re reading this, why not just set the default at 25fps? Much better to have a consistent frame rate than insisting on a jumpy 30fps.

2. Sharpening Settings Not Held.
This as been documented already. Pick up the custom scene mode, change the sharpening to the ‘soft’ setting, everything works just fine, switch the camera of and on again and custom sharpening setting is lost! Grrr!

What’s your experience with the new N95 firmware?
Phone: Nokia N95. Welcome to Earth!
